Monero surpasses Chainlink's market capitalization at $10.07 billion to enter the top 10

The different paths behind the single ranking change.
The technical explanation for this reversal is that market capitalization reflects cumulative price changes rather than recent momentum, and Monero has accumulated more during this crucial period. Monero's approximately 63% surge from early August to early September established its position, and even a slight dip then allowed it to outperform Chainlink, which was surging from lower lows.
Chainlink's recovery from $8-$9 in August to above $13 in September represents an increase of approximately 45-60% depending on the reference point, comparable to Monero's monthly increase in percentage terms. The difference lies in timing: Chainlink's growth was concentrated in the most recent week, while Monero's growth was spread throughout the preceding month, meaning Monero spent more time at the highs contributing to its average market capitalization, while Chainlink only recently reached its current higher valuation.
LINK's 20-day moving average is hovering around $11.15, meaning the current price above $13 represents a spread of approximately 16% from that trendline. This gap is a technical indicator of how much the recent price increase has exceeded its level, and that's why the RSI near 70 carries significant risk of correction rather than simply reflecting positive momentum.
What has driven Monero's growth?
Monero's growth in 2026 was one of the most sustained among large-cap assets, in a year when the cryptocurrency market as a whole was weakening. This security cryptocurrency surpassed Bitcoin Cash to take the 11th position in market capitalization in January 2026, after surpassing Pepe in May 2025 when it first crossed the $340 mark and reached a market capitalization of $6.43 billion.
The growth from $6.43 billion in May 2025 to $10.07 billion in September 2026 reflects a price trajectory from approximately $340 to approximately $570 within sixteen months. Analysis of Monero's position suggests the asset has reached or recently surpassed its previous nominal peak, rather than simply recovering from a price drop, with references to early 2026 highs in the $700-$800 range and historical peaks from 2017-2018 around $475-$500 depending on the data source.
That difference carries analytical weight. An asset recovering to a previous high has a clear reference point, and the argument for a regression to the average supports subsequent gains. An asset establishing new nominal territory requires increasing network demand to justify each subsequent valuation level, as there is no previous price level the market has reached to serve as a pivot point for expectations.
The factors driving demand behind Monero's strength include the structural element that has always defined this asset: it is the only large-cap cryptocurrency that offers transaction security by default at the protocol level, with ring signatures, anonymous addresses, and confidential transactions making the sender, receiver, and amount obscure by design, not by option. In an environment where blockchain analytics firms have demonstrated increasingly comprehensive attribution capabilities across transparent chains, and where regulatory frameworks including MiCA, the GENIUS Act, and Singapore's proposed stablecoin rules all include requirements for traceability and freezing, the value of an asset that cannot be selectively frozen or traced will belong to those who need it.
Two Assets, Two Arguments, One Ranking
The swap between Monero and Chainlink is interesting from a precise analytical standpoint because these two assets represent two almost contradictory arguments about what creates value in cryptocurrency.
Monero's core value lies in a characteristic that regulated infrastructures cannot replicate: absolute transaction security. Its need is tied to the level of oversight and control that exists elsewhere in the financial system, meaning that tighter regulation and improved analytical capabilities will increase, not decrease, its utility for users. It lacks an integrated narrative with institutions, faces pressure to be delisted from regulated exchanges across multiple jurisdictions, and is explicitly excluded from the list of licensed assets that frameworks such as Russia's Federal Law 282-FZ and similar regimes are establishing.
Chainlink's core value, however, is the infrastructure that regulated organizations depend on, embedded within the payment layers that banks, asset managers, and clearinghouses are building. Its demand increases with the level of blockchain adoption by organizations, and its token value increases through a fee model tied to that adoption. It faces no regulatory hostility and is positioned to be compatible with all major frameworks developing globally.
Assessment and Conclusion
Both assets have RSI readings close to 70, indicating a high risk of a correction due to overbought conditions. Monero, despite a 1.4% drop in the past week, remains in a strong technical uptrend after a month-long rally, with the consolidation phase potentially serving as a foundation for further price increases rather than a reversal.
Chainlink's position is more tense in the short term. The price breaking above $13 sits approximately 16% above the 20-day moving average of $11.15, a gap typically narrowed through a period of sideways consolidation while the average catches up or a downward correction towards the average. The 8.7% one-day increase to the current price is the kind of move that typically attracts profit-taking within a few days.
The ranking of each asset is likely to remain controversial due to the extremely small margin of difference. The $110 million gap between $10.07 billion and $9.96 billion represents only about 1.1% of each asset's market capitalization, meaning that a single trading session with opposing movements could reverse the rankings in either direction without any asset experiencing a significant change in value.
