Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich confirmed that no Bitcoin was sold amid rumors.

BounceBit – a Bitcoin restaking and yield generation platform on CeDeFi – has announced the permanent closure of its independent Layer 1 blockchain network and the re-issuance of the BB token as a BEP-20 standard token on the BNB Chain network.

Authorization Error, Not Private Key Error

The attack was not related to the leakage of private keys or the compromise of user wallets; this is a key difference that BounceBit emphasized in its announcements. The vulnerability lay in the authorization mechanism within the core module of the Evmos technology suite – the foundation used to build BounceBit's Layer 1 network. This design flaw allowed attackers to designate third-party accounts as the source of funds without any authorization checks, thereby executing unauthorized BB token transfers from accounts with completely secure private keys.

Block creation on the BounceBit Chain network was halted at block height 20,702,857, approximately 42 minutes after the last unauthorized transaction, preventing further withdrawals as soon as the team detected the anomaly. BounceBit confirmed that its CeDeFi, Prime, and RWA products were unaffected by the attack, as these services operate independently of the BounceBit Chain infrastructure and remained operational throughout the incident.

Evmos ceased operations in May 2026.

The decision to shut down the BounceBit Chain instead of patching the security vulnerability stems from a technical limitation that makes repairs impossible, not simply difficult. Evmos – the core blockchain platform of the BounceBit Chain – ceased operation in May 2026. Therefore, restoring the network would require far more effort than a typical upgrade cycle; the entire underlying technology system would need to be rebuilt, audited, and thoroughly tested before it could resume managing user assets. More importantly, this process would have to take place without support or maintenance from the now-defunct Evmos development team.

Faced with the choice between attempting to revive an abandoned platform fraught with uncertainty and migrating to a well-maintained network – one that houses a large concentration of BounceBit users – the project team decided to make the network migration. This decision also reflects established operational realities: the majority of BounceBit's products and users have migrated to the BNB Chain instead of continuing with the standalone Layer 1 network; this makes the BNB Chain the logical destination for ecosystem consolidation, regardless of whether or not an exploit occurs.

Market reaction to price and valuation.

BB hit a record low of $0.0079 on August 20th, the time when the network was temporarily shut down and the scale of the attack became clear. After BounceBit announced its detailed transition plan, the price of BB recovered to around $0.0111, a nearly 16% increase in 24 hours. This recovery shows the market's positive reaction to a clear transition roadmap, rather than the vague uncertainties that might arise from the network repair process – as well as the confirmation that the attacker's 286 million tokens would be removed from the reissued supply. This decision has a positive impact on the token economics model (tokenomics), as it prevents the risk of the attacker dumping a large amount of excess tokens onto the market.

Assessment and Conclusion

The case of BounceBit illustrates a risk that receives less attention in DeFi security discussions compared to smart contract vulnerabilities or key management issues: the operational risk that arises from building on a technology platform whose core development team has disbanded. When the Evmos project ceases operation in May 2026, every project built on it suffers from a "frozen" dependency component, which remains functional until a vulnerability is discovered, but cannot be patched through the official technical support channels (from the original developer) available on platforms that are actively maintained.

For other projects running on poorly maintained infrastructure, the BounceBit situation is a clear illustration of the risks associated with the infrastructure lifecycle. A platform that has ceased development doesn't necessarily immediately become less secure, but it loses the resilience and responsiveness inherent in ongoing maintenance when security vulnerabilities arise. The time between platform downtime and vulnerability discovery can span months or years, making this risk easily overlooked until it becomes an unavoidable problem.
