Ethereum leads the L1 market in terms of total value at risk (TVL) of the ecosystem
The latest ecosystem TVL rankings from Token Terminal (data as of mid-March 2026) show Ethereum maintaining its clear lead in total value locked (TVL) across Layer-1 blockchains.

TVL remains the leading chain strength indicator
According to data from Token Terminal, Ethereum continues to lead all Layer-1 blockchains in total value locked (TVL), maintaining its position as the primary payment layer for decentralized finance. Following closely behind are Tron, Solana, and BNB Chain, each occupying distinct positions within the broader blockchain economy.
While rankings aren't new, the composition and relative strength of these ecosystems tell a deeper story about how capital is allocated across blockchains—and why.
Total Value Locked (TVL) remains one of the most important indicators of blockchain health. It measures the amount of capital actively deployed across DeFi protocols—lending, staking, providing liquidity, and derivatives. In a maturing market, TVL is less about speculative capital flows and more about where capital chooses to stay and operate.
Ethereum: A Liquidity Hub for Institutions
Ethereum's dominance in TVL stems from its role as the most secure and widely used smart contract platform. It remains the preferred chain for:
Large-scale DeFi protocols.
Organizational-level applications.
Real Assets Tokenized (RWA).
Stablecoin payments.
Despite higher fees compared to its competitors, Ethereum benefits from abundant liquidity, network effects, and developer trust. Its ecosystem is also bolstered by Layer-2 scaling solutions, which expand capacity without fragmenting the core liquidity base. Ethereum's leadership position is not simply about being at the top, but also about being the most trusted place for capital.
Tron: The Stablecoin Payment Powerhouse
Tron's position as the second-largest chain by TVL is largely driven by its dominance in stablecoin transfers, particularly USDT. The network has become a crucial route for cross-border payments, remittances, and high-volume, low-cost transactions.
Unlike Ethereum, which houses complex DeFi ecosystems, Tron's strength lies in its efficient capital flow, making it particularly popular in emerging markets.
Tron's TVL value reflects its utility rather than its integration capabilities – capital flows through Tron more than it is built upon.
Solana: High-performance growth and user-centric approach.
Solana's increased TVL reflects its position as a high-performance blockchain optimized for speed, low cost, and user-centric applications.
Its ecosystem is increasingly driven by decentralized exchanges, consumer applications and payments, NFT and gaming activity, and the growing liquidity of stablecoins.
Solana's advantage lies in its ability to enable real-time financial interaction, making it attractive to both retail users and high-frequency trading environments.
BNB Chain: Retail Liquidity and its Synergy with Exchanges
BNB Chain continues to maintain a strong TVL position, supported by its deep integration with the Binance ecosystem. It serves as a hub for retail DeFi activity, token launches and liquidity mining, as well as exchange-driven capital flows.
While it may not be a leader in innovation or institutional adoption, the BNB Chain has advantages in distribution, accessibility, and the ability to attract users on a large scale.
Our review
Ethereum's continued leadership in total value locked (TVL) affirms its role as the core financial layer of the cryptocurrency ecosystem, while the rise of Tron, Solana, and BNB Chain reflects increasing specialization among the chains.
The key is not just who leads, but how the capital is used. As cryptocurrencies mature, TVL becomes less dependent on speculative capital flows and focuses more on efficiently allocating liquidity across different blockchain economies.
