CZ proposed the BNB chain as an artificial intelligence infrastructure when it launched on Nasdaq

Sean Bowe has published a draft proposal, circulating as draft-bowe-end-zcg-stream.md, to end the automatic allocation of 8% of newly issued ZEC to the Endowment Fund.

What CZ shared earlier

The notable statement is that cryptocurrency will be the native currency for artificial intelligence (AI). The conditions surrounding this statement are even more informative than the statement itself. Zhao said that AI could use bitcoin, existing stablecoins, or future tokens issued by AI companies, a significantly more open-minded view than the extreme stance on BNB. Regarding the role of BNB Chain, he made it clear about the uncertainty: the hope is to make BNB Chain the mainstream platform, but that remains to be seen.

Regarding payments, he offered even more insightful observations, stating that cryptocurrency payments still face many hurdles and advising payment startups to focus on underserved markets and money transfer routes rather than competing with Apple Pay or Google Pay in the United States. This is an accurate assessment of where cryptocurrency payments truly work, and it contrasts significantly with the marketing strategies of most cryptocurrency payment companies.

The basic argument is sound. Automated software agents transacting with each other need a payment system that doesn't require bank accounts, merchant relationships, or human approval for each payment, and card networks are structurally unsuitable for small, machine-initiated payments. Whether that need will materialize on a large scale, and on which supply chains, remains unresolved, and that's precisely what Zhao said.

This company is not yet a fully formed business

BNB Standard's position is more modest than the size of the treasury it holds. CEO Alex Odagiu, appointed after a June deal with largest shareholder YZi Labs, in which Ella Zhang and Matthew Roszak were also appointed to the board, said the plan is to operate the company's own validator as a first step toward building a business operating on the BNB chain. He stated frankly: "We are here to build a business operating on the BNB chain." He also said it is not currently a payments company, noting that payments and AI agents could become sources of activity for the network.

Operating a validator is a real step, and a small one at that. It generates revenue from staking the treasury the company already holds, transforming a passive position into something that generates cash, and that's the same logic that ETH treasury management companies followed when they moved from holding to staking and then to active deployment. The gap from there to an operational business is enormous.

The stock price reflects this gap. BNC traded at around $5.36 on Monday and has fallen nearly 17% since the beginning of the year, suggesting it's a fund management company trading as a fund management company rather than a real operating entity. That discount is precisely the problem SharpLink faced in the ETH market and one that every digital asset fund management company eventually faces: the question of why investors should buy the shell instead of the asset itself.

Analyzing two events together

In the same week, BNB Chain announced documentation on its new Layer 1 with a 200-millisecond block time and no separate token. Zhao described the chain as an artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, and the largest public BNB holder listed it on Nasdaq with a validation plan. It was a coordinated presentation of a single thesis: BNB is a unique asset across multiple chains, with institutional access through a listing vehicle and a technical narrative aimed at the workloads everyone is currently seeking to access.

The synergy is both a strength and a cause for concern. A narrative about AI tied to a chain where a high-throughput network hasn't been deployed, promoted alongside a treasury management vehicle that hasn't yet built a business, is a collection of intentions presented as a position. Zhao's own caution, that it still needs to be done, is the most accurate statement in the papers. What will make it a reality is a public test network launching on schedule, actual transaction volume driven by the agent rather than just announcements about it, and BNC generating revenue from things other than the appreciation of what it holds.
