The marked fields identify two historically significant data points: the domain name itself, BITCOIN.ORG , and the creation timestamp, 18-Aug-2008 13:19:55 UTC. The registrant identification fields reveal the deliberate anonymity employed by Satoshi: Anonymousspeech LLC, the same authorized registration service used by the registrant, appears with both the registrant and the organization name, with the address Nakano-ku Tokyo matching AnonymousSpeech's operating address and not any location identifying the actual individual registrant.

AnonymousSpeech was specifically designed to register domain names on behalf of clients who wanted to keep their personal information away from publicly accessible WHOIS databases, charging a fee to act as a public registrant while maintaining the true owner's identity in their private records. Satoshi's use of this service to register BITCOIN.ORG established, from the outset, a privacy-protecting anonymity model that would govern his entire involvement with the Bitcoin project from August 2008 until his departure in April 2011.

The status fields CLIENT TRANSFER PROHIBITED, TRANSFER PROHIBITED, and ADDPERIOD are standard ICANN status codes that appear during the initial registration renewal period and do not indicate anything unusual regarding the registration's operation. The initial expiration date of 18-08-2009 reflects the standard one-year initial registration period, after which the domain was renewed through subsequent annual renewals and has remained continuously registered until now.

There is a 74-day period between domain name registration and white paper publication.

Satoshi registered the domain name BITCOIN.ORG in August 2008 but did not publish the Bitcoin white paper until October 31, 2008, when he posted the article "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Cryptocurrency System" to the cryptography mailing list Metzdowd. The 74-day gap between domain registration and white paper publication suggests that Satoshi had decided on the project name, established a corresponding online presence, and carefully considered the public infrastructure of what he was building before revealing its existence to the cryptography community.

The decision to protect the domain name before publishing the white paper reflects a practical priority: once the white paper is made public and attracts attention, the corresponding domain name will become an easy target for domain hijackers and malicious actors. By registering BITCOIN.ORG before going public with the project, Satoshi ensured that the official web address for information about Bitcoin would be under his control from the moment the project was first publicly released.

Satoshi's statement that Bitcoin source code development began in Q2 2007 suggests the project had been under development for over a year before the domain name was registered. This means the August 2008 domain registration did not mark the beginning of Bitcoin's technical development but rather the start of preparing the public infrastructure—a crucial distinction in understanding the project's progression from private cryptographic research to a public network.

Bitcoin.org was originally registered and owned by Satoshi Nakamoto and Martti Malmi, an early Bitcoin developer from Finland, known by the username Sirius, who contributed to the project's development and helped maintain the website in its early stages. The domain registration information recorded in the WHOIS log only reflects the registrant's security authorization, not the actual ownership that Satoshi shared with Malmi in the early stages of the project.

When Satoshi left the Bitcoin project in April 2011, emailing other developers that he had "moved on to other things" and that Bitcoin was well-managed, he intentionally transferred ownership of BITCOIN.ORG to people outside the Bitcoin development team. Separating domain ownership from the development community was deliberate: Satoshi did not want any individual, organization, or group, including developers most closely involved in Bitcoin's technical direction, to claim control of the project's main information website.

Since then, the domain has been managed under the alias Cobra Bitcoin, with continuous community governance maintaining the site as an open-source project managed via GitHub with over 4,400 contributions from more than 245 contributors worldwide. The current domain registration expiration date in 2029 has become a point of discussion within the community, with some observers speculating whether Satoshi will appear to renew the registration before its expiration – a speculation reflecting a long-standing fascination with Satoshi's identity and potential reappearance rather than any operational risk to the domain's continuity, given the proven track record of the current administrators in maintaining it.
