The most interesting thing is that BNB Chain launched a new L1 without requiring a token

BNB Chain has published technical documentation describing a new Layer 1 network, currently named New L1, with a target block creation time of 200 milliseconds and a pre-confirmation time of approximately 20 milliseconds.

Decision Not to Issue Tokens

Most new blockchains in the last five years have issued tokens, because tokens fund development, reward early users, and generate speculative interest to kickstart the ecosystem. The price to pay is that each token disperses the attention, liquidity, and security budget of the network it belongs to, and creates a user group with interests distinct from the parent chain.

Therefore, not issuing a token is a realistic choice with real consequences. There's no airdrop to attract liquidity from speculators, no token price to serve as a marketing metric, and no distinct incentive for validators to design. Instead, there's a single asset whose demand comes from two chains, not one, and a staking model where staked BNB creates non-transferable govBNB at a 1:1 ratio for voting. That design keeps governance weight tied to economic commitment and prevents the leasing of governance rights.

Ethereum's rollup ecosystem is a debated counter-argument. Layer 2 tokens there have appropriated value that critics claim belongs to ETH, and the debate over value accumulation has dragged on for years. BNB Chain is proactively addressing that argument by never creating a second asset. Whether that discipline can withstand the usual crowdfunding dynamics remains an open question, and the answer will only be known when the mainnet launches.

The technical claims are exaggerated and unproven.

The 200-millisecond block target is based on an advanced Parlia consensus mechanism using BLS voting, aiming for transaction completion in under one second, with transaction order separation from execution so that validators can continue agreeing on blocks without waiting for processing to complete. The Multi-Lane mechanism dedicates capacity to specific transaction types including high-frequency transactions, order books, and settlements.

Separating the order of transactions from execution is an architecture that aligns with the stated goal and is also where the complexity arises, as a blockchain committing to an order before knowing the outcome must handle execution scenarios different from what was intended. The 20-millisecond pre-confirmation carries its own caveat in the documentation, which deserves further emphasis: pre-confirmations can be revoked before completion, and applications handling irreversible transactions should wait for execution completion. The 20-millisecond figure is not safe to implement as a user interface improvement rather than a payment improvement.

Solidity contracts will be convertible, although some Ethereum RPC methods and transaction types will not be supported, a detail that makes a weekend-long conversion a quarter of the engineering work for any non-trivial application. The abstraction of the native account with funded fees and batch operations is truly useful. The optional security layer using shielded pooling is still incomplete, requiring further security checks and trust setup work, with documentation warning against using it with real money.

Comparisons that people will make

Solana activated Alpenglow last week, shortening target completion times to around 150 milliseconds, and Hyperliquid's HyperBFT has been a benchmark for dedicated trading chains throughout this year. BNB Chain's numbers are also in that range, and the Multi-Lane design clearly targets the same workload.

What sets this endeavor apart is the distribution, not the technology. A new chain without a token and without an ecosystem offers no reason for anyone to use it, except that it's tied to Binance, to BSC's existing application base, and to the existing BNB holder base. That's a significantly better starting position than a standalone launch, and that's why the bridge is more important than block creation time. An unfinished root bridge is the real deciding factor for the entire plan.

Assessment and Conclusion

Nothing. An internal multi-validator development network is underway. The public test network is expected to launch in late 2026 and the official network in early 2027, the document notes that the schedule is subject to change. The bridge is not yet complete and the security system has not been audited.

Understanding this as a formal launch is incorrect. This is a published design, and published designs from chains with such a high degree of distribution deserve serious consideration precisely because this distribution eliminates the common initialization problem. Things to watch out for are whether the public test network launches on schedule, what the measured level of completeness will be like under adversarial conditions rather than in a controlled development network, and whether the commitment not to issue tokens is maintained during the period when a token issuance would be most attractive.
