JPMorgan included Bitcoin in its assumptions but excluded it from its portfolio

JP Morgan Asset Management's long-term 2027 capital market forecast for the first time includes a projection for bitcoin, expecting a compound annual rate of return of 10% over the next ten to fifteen years.

The sentence defines the forecast.

The report states that they haven't included bitcoin in the main covariance matrix, citing volatility and unstable correlation, and instead constructed a smaller, separate matrix for it. To anyone outside the field of institutional asset allocation, that sounds like a technical detail. But it's not. The LTCMA exists to serve portfolio optimization, and the expected return of an asset is only half of what the optimization tool needs. The other half is how that asset fluctuates along with everything else, because that determines the size of the position. An asset excluded from the main covariance matrix cannot be sized using the firm's standard process, meaning JPMorgan published expected returns for bitcoin while refusing to allocate it within the framework that the number exists to serve.

That is a well-considered view, not a careless one, and it is an honest view. The correlation of bitcoin to stocks has shifted many times throughout its history, acting as a risk asset in some regimes and as something else in others. An optimization tool given an unstable correlation will inevitably produce a erroneous allocation.

The fluctuating numbers speak for themselves.

JPMorgan assumes Bitcoin's annual volatility is 55% compared to gold's approximately 17%. Compared to a 10% compounded return, this Sharpe ratio is significantly lower than the equity-based assumption, meaning the forecast is considerably less optimistic than the rankings suggest. Bitcoin tops the list for returns and trails by a considerable margin in risk-adjusted returns. Readers considering only the 10% figure have accepted half of the forecast, which is somewhat asset-favored.

The average annual return in the report is 20.9%, compared to a compound annual return of 10%, and the difference between these two figures represents the volatility-induced decline. The average is the average annual return; the compound annual return is the amount of money an investor actually retains over that period. The nearly 11-point difference is significant and a direct consequence of the 55% volatility assumption. JPMorgan's decision to publish both figures is helpful because the average often appears in marketing materials.

Why is inclusion in a portfolio still important?

All of this doesn't make the forecast trivial. The LTCMA is one of the most widely used documents in institutional asset management, used by pension funds, endowment funds, and advisory platforms as reference data for strategic allocations. The presence of an asset in it, even in a separate matrix, shifts it from the investment committee having to justify the review to the institutional framework having already stated its position. It's a significant shift in the burden of justification, and it came in the same year JPMorgan expanded its acceptance of IBIT collateral for assessing clients' net asset value and Merrill allowed advisors to propose allocations of one to four percent.

The pattern running through these decisions is consistent. Large institutions are building mechanisms to hold, lend, and model bitcoin while refusing to integrate it into their core operations. LTCMA 2027 reflects that same stance, written into a research paper: a number, a warning, and a deliberate distance between the two.

Assessment and Conclusion

The condition JPMorgan sets out is correlation stability, not price stability. If the relationship between Bitcoin and stocks and interest rates remains stable at a predictable level for many years, the asset will be included in the principal covariance matrix and become allocable through standard procedures, which is the step that truly facilitates capital movement. Otherwise, Bitcoin could generate a 10% compounded return over a decade and still fall outside the models, because the hurdle has never been the expected return. Understanding forecasts as simply price predictions misses the main purpose of this document.
